Project Summary

Umberslade was proud to play a part in preserving a piece of Coventry’s art and history. We provided all labour and plant for the enabling saw cuts and drilling needed to remove the William Mitchell concrete mural from the Three Tuns pub.

The challenge

The large-scale mural formed part of the structure of the Three Tuns in Coventry city centre. With the area being cleared for a major regeneration scheme, the mural had to survive the demolition of the building around it and then be moved.

Schedule of Work

Before demolition started, we diamond track sawed the perimeter of the mural and made vertical cuts to separate it into sections. We also diamond core drilled holes for a supporting structure to be inserted.

Our client then stabilised and protected the mural while demolition continued around it, with the client, council leaders and demolition contractors watching closely as the Three Tuns came down. It was a great project to be part of as Coventry city centre is transformed.

Key figures

  • 5.2 metres of high-frequency hand sawing to 230mm deep, pre-cut to 150mm with a Tyrolit TS40 ANNA saw and deepened with a TR40 HF ring saw
  • 20 linear metres of horizontal track saw cuts with our Pentruder HF wall saw
  • 14 linear metres of vertical track saw cuts
  • 25 cores drilled horizontally through the surrounding wall, 250mm diameter by 350mm deep
