Umberslade

linear metre retaining wall reinforced

Project Summary

Umberslade was asked to reinforce an 11 linear metre reinforced concrete retaining wall with a stone face at a private home in rural Warwickshire, using Platipus Earth Anchors.

The challenge

We originally quoted to install 16 anchors at 6 metres embedment depth, set in two rows. Once on site, diamond core drilling through the wall at an angle proved difficult, with the core jamming on the drainage pea gravel behind the wall.

Schedule of Work

Rather than push on with a method that wasn’t working, we stopped and talked it through with Platipus Geotechnical Engineers and our client. Together we agreed a design change, adjusting the height at which the anchors were installed and increasing the anchor size.

It was a great example of collaborative working between our client, Platipus Earth Anchors and Umberslade’s site team, overcoming the ground conditions as the works progressed.

Key figures

  • 16 Platipus Earth Anchors installed to 6 metres deep
  • 59kN ultimate load
  • Diamond core drilled through the stone-faced wall for each anchor head
  • 11 linear metre retaining wall reinforced
